Entrance costs MX$85, and you will need to either take a bus, a taxi or drive to reach it from Oaxaca.

El árbol del Tule (Tule Tree) is found in the town of Santa María del Tule about 6 miles west of Oaxaca. It is believed to be the widest tree in the world.
Although not the oldest in the world, Tule Tree is also ancient, at approximately 2,000 years. It also has a nearby younger neighbour, but it is “only” around 1,000 years old, a mere whipper-snapper in comparison.
The tree itself lives on a church property, and you will need to pay admission to enter the area. There is a fence around the tree to prevent visitors from climbing or otherwise damaging it.
The tree is quite conveniently located in the centre of Santa María del Tule, adjacent a town square. Across the square are a number of local restaurants, where you can find authentic Oaxacan cuisine at prices lower than those in Oaxaca.
You can reach the Tule Tree by bus or by taxi. Buses cost MX$10 and depart frequently from Oaxaca, and will take about 15 to 20 minutes. Taxis will be quicker, but will cost around MX$35 – MX$50.
If you are thinking about doing a tour, you could combine Tule Tree, Mitla, and Hierve el Agua into one tour. They are in the same general south-western direction from Oaxaca, so you could visit them all in a day.

Description:
Hierve el Agua lies approximately 40 miles to the south-east of Oaxaca.
The site is a wonderful geological marvel of two petrified waterfalls. The smaller one is called la cascada chica and the bigger one is called la cascada grande.
The waterfalls were formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich waters ran over the edge of the cliff and down the escarpment.
The plateau above the falls is covered in large shallow pools, with various beautiful mineral formations that look like atolls in an ocean. It makes you think that you are walking on a shallow reef in the Caribbean.
You can also hike to the bottom of the waterfalls, where there some more pools that you can sit in. There are change-rooms and toilets nearby.
Local Oaxacans believe that the mineralised waters have healing properties. Be aware, though, that despite its name, the waters in the pools can be quite cold if you’ve arrived early in the day.
The best way to reach Hierve de Agua is by car, private driver or bus.
If you decide to take the bus, be aware that you will need to exit the bus to change vehicles at two points. From there, you’ll be shuttled along by small van-drivers (known as colectivos).
Colectivos operate such that they only leave when they are full, so you may need to be patient. The route may also be a little bumpy, and the ride will likely be cosy.
But on the plus side, you’ll get a chance to get to know some fellow travellers.
A taxi will cost between MX$150 – MX$250, plus MX$10 for tolls. Buses leave from Oaxaca to Hierve el Agua every hour, and cost around MX$50 for a round trip.
When you arrive at Hierve el Agua, you’ll walk down a gentle slope, and you’ll reach the top of the waterfalls.

The Parque Juárez El Llano is a large park situated just outside the historic centre of Oaxaca, a few blocks north of the Hotel Las Mariposas. You can reach it easily from the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, and it is a few blocks west of the Barrio de Jalatlaco.
The park has been an open space since at least the late 18th century and began to be used as a public park at the beginning of the 19th century. It is full of paths to walk, and there are lots of shady benches for you to sit down and relax a moment.
In the centre of the park, there is a monument to the former president of Mexico, Benito Juárez Garcia, who was a Oaxacan native. To the north of the park lies the Iglesia de Guadelupe, and a few blocks to the east is the Templo de San Matías Jalatlaco.

The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (our lady of solitude) is a beautiful church just to the east of the historic centre of Oaxaca. It was constructed between 1682 and 1689 and raised to the status of Basílica in 1959.
The basilica has an odd story surrounding its construction. Legend has it that a mule driver on his way to Guatemala from Veracruz discovered that he had an extra mule shortly after arriving in Oaxaca. The mule was carrying a very heavy box, and collapsed outside the hermitage of San Sebastian under its weight.
The mule driver was unable to lift the mule and its box, and to avoid any trouble, called the authorities. When they opened the box, they found an image of the virgin of solicitude, a cross and a note saying “Virgin of the Cross”. On the strength of this omen, the local bishop ordered the construction of a sanctuary in honour of the virgin of solicitude, who is the patron of Oaxaca.
The basilica has a beautifully ornate façade, and its interior is richly decorated. As is common in South American places of worship, the interior of the building is lavishly adorned with gold, stained glass windows and beautiful artwork.
There is also a statue of the virgin of solicitude, which is constructed from two kilograms of gold and several hundred diamonds.
Fewer tourists tend to visit the cathedral, given that it is outside the historic centre, so it is a nice place to briefly relax the bustle of the city. However, it is an active place of worship and is still frequently visited by local Oaxacans.

The houses and shops lining the Andador have beautifully coloured adobe walls. When there is a festival planned, coloured flags or other materials are often strung from roof to roof above the footway, creating a spectacular artificial canopy of colour.

El Museo Textil de Oaxaca is a small museum situated in the historic centre of Oaxaca.
The museum building dates to the 19th century, during which time it was used a hospital, the Hospital de Bélen. It was later bought and restored by a Oaxacan charity, and now houses the Museo Textil de Oaxaca.

The Mercado Benito Juárez is very centrally located in the historic centre of Oaxaca, one block south-west of the Zócalo. It is a mixed market, selling clothing and artisanal products of all kinds, a wide variety of foodstuffs, and, well, basically everything that you could think of.
The market is a covered market, and despite the hustle and bustle, it is generally quite well-organised. Vendors of similar products are usually grouped together, which makes it easier to shop.
There are vendors that sell cooked food, so you won’t need to leave to eat unless you want to.
