Posada Real Puerto Escondido: The Definitive Review

Where is Posada real?

Posada Real is a brilliantly located 141-room family-friendly hotel near the center of Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Puerto Escondido is situated on the Pacific Ocean about 160 miles south of Oaxaca City and about 250 miles south-east of Acapulco.

If you aren’t familiar with Puerto Escondido, it’s a beach town in southern Mexico that is home to Playa Zicatela, known as the “Mexican pipeline”.

It’s a remarkably beautiful place that has kept its laid-back beach vibe despite an increase in popularity in recent times.

Let’s take a look now at how to get you to Posada Real Puerto Escondido.

Posada Real Puerto Escondido: The Definitive Review

How Do I Get To Posada Real?

Getting to Posada Real Puerto Escondido is a relatively simple process.

The first step is to fly into Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM). The second step is to get a taxi, rent a car or book a private transfer to the hotel.

I’ve set out the steps you’ll need to take to get to Posada Real as simply and efficiently as possible.

Flying Into Puerto Escondido

To reach Posada Real, you’ll need to first fly into Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), which is just a mile from the hotel.

You won’t be able to get a direct flight to Puerto Escondido International Airport from outside Mexico, so unless you are already in Mexico, you’ll need to take a connecting flight.

From within Mexico, there are regular flights to Puerto Escondido from Mexico City, Tijuana, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Oaxaca.

Flights from Mexico City are by far the most frequent. Unless you’re planning on stopping over in one of the other cities listed above for a few days, I recommend you fly via Mexico City.

Puerto Escondido Airport to the Hotel

Once you arrive in Puerto Escondido airport, you’ve got a few options to get to Posada Real. You can take a taxi, rent a car or book a private transfer.

I’ve gone through each of these below.

Rent a Car

If you’re staying for more than a day or two, I recommend that you rent a car at the airport.

Even though Posada Real is very centrally located just a few minutes south of the Puerto Escondido airport, many of the attractions in Puerto Escondido are outside of the town center.

Having a rental car is the ideal way to get around and Posada Real also offers free parking, so you can easily park the car at the hotel.

Getting a car at the airport is very easy. You can book ahead and pick up your car in the arrivals hall of the terminal of Puerto Escondido airport when you get off the plane.

I recommend using DiscoverCars to book the best deal available ahead of your arrival. You can expect to pay around US$30 per day plus gas for a basic rental car.

Take A Taxi

If you aren’t renting a car, the simplest way to get from the airport to the hotel is taking a taxi.

You’ll need to be able to tell the driver your destination and agree a price for the trip. The journey should cost you around US$10 and you may need to haggle to get the driver down into that range.

You’ll also need to make sure that you have Mexican pesos with you, as the driver may not accept US dollars and won’t take credit cards.

Book a Private Transfer

If you want to book a private transfer to the airport, the hotel staff will be able to arrange one for you for an additional charge.

You can reach out to the staff at Posada Real using the contact details below:

  • +52 954 582 0133
  • info@hotelenpuertoescondido.com
  • Blvd. Benito Juarez No. 1, Fracc. Bacocho, Puerto Escondido, Oax., C.P. 71980

If you’d prefer to arrange the transfer yourself, the simplest way to do it is to use a platform like Viator. There are plenty of different providers for you to choose from, and prices start at around US$50 for a couple.

3. Rooms

There are 141 rooms available at Posada Real Puerto Escondido with views of the ocean, the gardens or the pool area, depending on the room you choose.

The categories of rooms available are standard rooms, superior rooms, and junior suites. I’ve described each of these below.

Standard Suite

Each 269 sq. ft. Standard Suite is furnished simply but tastefully with tiled flooring and marble counter-tops.

The suite comes with a king-sized bed and you can also choose to replace the king-sized bed with double beds if you prefer.

The rooms are air-conditioned and also come with black-out curtains to help you sleep better and longer. In the private shower-only bathroom you’ll find complimentary soaps, shampoos and a hair-dryer.

You’ll also have the use of a flatscreen TV, WiFi, a desk, wardrobe, phone, and room safe.

Standard Suites start at around US$150 per night for a couple.

Superior Suite

The Superior Suites at the Posada Real Puerto Escondido have a private terrace looking directly out onto the ocean, and are slightly larger than the Standard Suites at 312 sq. ft.

The room amenities are otherwise the same as those described above.

The Superior Suites start at around US$175 per night for a couple.

Junior Suite

Each of the three Junior Suites available at Posada Real Puerto Escondido are also 312 sq. ft.

Although they are the same size as the Superior Suites, the Junior Suites have a corner position closest to the sea that allows for beautiful 180 degree views of the ocean from the private balcony.

The room amenities available in the Standard Suite are also available in the Junior Suite. You can also choose to replace the king-sized bed with single beds if you prefer.

Junior Suites start at around US$220 per night for a couple.

4. Hotel Facilities

Posada Real Puerto Escondido is divided into the upper area with the amazing garden terrace and Coco’s Beach Club, with it’s bungalow bar and direct access to Playa Bacocho.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple for a romantic getaway or as a family looking for a place where your children can amuse themselves, the Posada Real has a great selection of facilities available.

Pool Areas

The Posada Real Puerto Escondido has two separate pool areas, one opposite the main hotel area and another down at Coco’s Beach Club.

Each of the pools areas is quite spacious and is lined with sun loungers. I’ve set out a little more detail on each of them below.

Upper Pool Area

The upper pool area consists of two separate pools in the main courtyard area opposite the La Hacienda restaurant.

They’re also very close to the beautiful gardens of the hotel, where you can sit and dry off while staring out at the ocean.

Coco’s Beach Club Pool Area

The Coco’s Beach Club pool area is a beautifully designed interconnected pool area with a little island in the middle reachable by a small bridge.

You can also enjoy a cocktail from the nearby bar on one of the many sun loungers.

Beach Access

Posada Real Puerto Escondido also has direct access to Playa Bacocho, one of Puerto Escondido’s most well-known and beautiful beaches.

Playa Bacocho is a few miles long, so it’s a great beach for walking, but it isn’t sheltered, so it isn’t suitable for swimming.

If you looking for a swimmable beach, you’re better off going over to Playa Marinero or to Playa Carrizalillo. You can reach them both on foot or in a quick taxi ride.

Other Facilities

Posada Real Puerto Escondido also has a full-sized tennis court (pictured) that you can use to work up a sweat before diving into the pool.

The garden terrace area also has a mini-golf putting course, which might be a good one for you if you’re travelling with your children.

Down at the beach, the hotel operates Coco’s Beach Club, which has a great beachside bar, restaurant and private beach seating area.

5. Restaurants

Posada Real Puerto Escondido has a great selection of onsite restaurants and bars.

1. La Hacienda

La Hacienda is the hotel onsite restaurant in the upper area of the hotel complex, opposite the round and square pools in the courtyard.

The restaurant is open for buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. At breakfast, you can have eggs cooked to order, and for lunch the restaurant offers handmade tacos, tortillas, soups and more.

Of an evening, the restaurant offers international cuisine, often with an additional few special dishes following a Italian or Spanish theme.

2. Coco’s restaurant & Bar

Coco’s Restaurant & Bar is set in a cute little bungalow area down at Coco’s Beach Club next to a network of beautiful swimming pools.

The bar area specialises in cocktails and features hanging seats to really get you in the relaxed holiday mood.

3. La Palapita

If you don’t want to make the trip down the hill to Coco’s Beach Club for a drink, another option is La Palapita, which is a small cabana bar in the upper area of the hotel.

The bar is only open at sunset, but is worth visiting to have a drink in the garden area overlooking the ocean and watching the colors of the sky change as the air cools and the sun goes down.

6. Reviews

Posada Real Puerto Escondido has a reasonable rating of 7.4 out of 10 from over 150 reviews. However, the rating for couples is a quite respectable 8.7 out of 10.

With few exceptions, recent reviews are quite positive, although a few people have noted that the hotel is started to look a little dated in some areas, and the hotel will likely need a renovation in the next few years.

Check-in at Posada Real is from 3:00pm, and check-out is before noon.

Late check-out may be available, but you should contact the hotel to confirm if you think you will arrive outside the ordinary check-in hours.

8. Pet-Friendly?

No, unfortunately Posada Real is not pet-friendly.

If you want to visit this hotel, you’ll need to find a pet-sitter.

9. Family-Friendly?

Yes, children of any age are welcome at Posada Real.

The hotel is great for children, as it has two separate pool areas, a garden area where they can run around, and private access to a beach.

You can also request children’s meals at the on-site restaurant for an additional charge.

10. Nearby Attractions

Puerto Escondido is full of interesting things to do and beautiful beaches to explore, and you can easily reach them with your rental car or by taxi from Posada Real.

I’ve set out a few below that I recommend you put on your shortlist. Don’t forget your sunhat, suncream, and a bottle of water, particularly if you’re exploring in the summer sun.

Playa Carrizalillo

Playa Carrizalillo taken from the south of the beach from an elevated position at dusk

Unless you are a pro-surfer, Playa Carrizalillo is hands-down the best beach in Puerto Escondido. It’s within walking distance of the hotel, about a mile away.

Although it’s only about 300 ft long, it’s a picturesque swimmable beach with gentle waves, turquoise waters, and a sheltered shoreline.

If you swim out just a little way offshore, you’ll also discover a live coral reef full of marine life, making it the perfect place for snorkelling.

And when you’re done for the day, there are some great places to eat nearby if you want to grab a bite before heading back to the hotel.

Baby Turtle Release

A baby turtle with its head and flippers leaning out of a wooden bowl

If you haven’t experienced a sea turtle release, I recommend doing one while you’re staying at Posada Real.

The Oaxaca coastline is a breeding ground for four of the seven varieties of sea turtles that exist on planet Earth. Some of those turtles species are endangered, and in and around Puerto Escondido there are non-profit organisations that try to support them.

Part of that work is incubating the eggs laid by the adult female turtles and helping the babies into the ocean after they hatch.

For a fee of around US$10, you can participate in a sea turtle release and watch them flapping their cute leathery little way down the beach and into the ocean.

The closest place to do a sea turtle release is a little further north along Playa Bacocho, which is the beach you can directly access from Posada Real.

At Playa Bacocho, turtle releases take place at 5:00pm of an evening. You’ll need to book and pay a fee of US$10.

The non-profit that runs the releases is ViveMar. Their contact details are set out below:

ViveMar Contact Details

  • +52 954 114 5568
  • vivemar.sc@gmail.com

You can also join a tour to a different beach if you’d prefer.

Casa Wabi

If you like art installations, you will love Casa Wabi. It’s a little over 15 miles to the west of the hotel, though, so if you don’t have a rental car, you’ll need to ask the hotel staff to book you a taxi.

Casa Wabi is an artistic space that houses several resident artists and has 460 m² of contemporary art exhibits.

It was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando under the initiative of the Mexican artist Bosco Sodi.

It’s open Mondays to Fridays at 10:00am, noon, and 4:00pm, and on the weekends at 10:00am, noon and 2:00pm.

You will need to make a reservation on their website and entrance will cost you US$30 (MX$600) per person.

Posada Real Pros and Cons

To pull all of the information above together for you, I’ve set out below the pros and cons of Posada Real Puerto Escondido as I see them.

Pros

There are some great pros for Posada Real.

Great Pool, Garden & Beach Areas

In the upper area of the hotel where the apartments are, the hotel has a beautiful pool area as well as a spacious garden terrace area looking directly out onto the ocean.

Down at Coco’s Beach Club, you have another gorgeous pool area and direct access to the beach.

The offering here for a hotel of this size is quite good.

Top Location

The hotel also has a great location that is close to everything.

From the hotel you have direct access to Playa Bacocho and Playa Carrizalillo is within walking distance of the hotel. You can get to Playa Zicatela and Playa Principal in a quick 5 to 10 minute taxi ride.

The hotel is also only a mile from the airport and is ideally located to reach all other attractions in Puerto Escondido.

Great For Families

Posada Real is family-friendly, and the layout and facilities available make it a great hotel for children.

There are two different pool complexes, a large grassy garden terrace area in front of the sea, and the private access to the beach via Coco’s Beach Club.

For a hotel of its size, the offering for children is a definite plus.

Posada Real Puerto Escondido: The Definitive Review

Cons

There are a few cons to Posada Real, although some of these are inevitable given the location of the hotel and its style.

No Spa Facilities

One point to note that is that Posada Real doesn’t have any spa facilities of any kind. There’s no spa area and no massage or other treatment services that can be booked in your room.

If you’re not into hotel spa treatments, this may not be a big deal. The hotel has other facilities including two pool areas, two restaurants and bars, a tennis court, a mini golf putting area and private beach access.

But if you are keen on your spa facilities, it’s a definite con, especially given the many other hotels and resorts in Puerto Escondido that offer more in this regard.

Approaching Renovation Time

Posada Real was built in 1976 and was last renovated in 2001.

Hotels usually require a full renovation every 30 years, so I would expect the Posada Real to need a refresh in the next few years. There are some reviews that suggest this is the case, although those are definitely in the minority.

Still, I think it’s worth flagging, because at a minimum, the hotel won’t have the fresh modern look that you would get at a flash new hotel like the Casona Sforza.

Expensive All-Inclusive Option

Ordinarily, I am a big fan of all-inclusive options, because you can usually get great value for money.

There is an all-inclusive option available at Posada Real and it will cost you US$80 per couple per day. If you upgrade to the all-inclusive option, you’ll have access to three meals as well as unlimited drinks.

If you eat heartily at each meal and indulge a little on cocktails, you can certainly get your money’s worth, but in my mind, US$80 is a little on the expensive side. By way of comparison, at Las Brisas Huatulco, in the nearby resort region of Huatulco, the upgrade to all-inclusive only costs US$30 for a couple.

I appreciate that the Posada Real is not an enormous hotel and that I don’t know their profit margins, but I think the value for money of their all-inclusive package is a little hard to justify at the current pricing.

Posada Real Puerto Escondido: The Definitive Review

My Personal Views

In my view, Posada Real Puerto Escondido is a great hotel, particularly if you are travelling with your family.

As far as beaches go, it has a brilliant location with direct private access to Playa Bacocho. You can also walk to Playa Carrizalillo, arguably the best beach in Puerto Escondido, and the hotel is also very close to all of the local Puerto Escondido attractions.

Within the hotel complex, there are great pool areas surrounded by open gardens with lots of palm trees to give you that holiday feeling. The hotel terrace with its sunset bar is also the perfect place to watch the sun go down over the ocean.

Unless you’re planning on spending most of your time in the hotel, I’d recommend against the all-inclusive option at its current pricing. I’d suggest that you just use the fantastic location of the hotel and walk or take a taxi over to the great bars and restaurants in Puerto Escondido.

All in all, I think the hotel is a great option for your stay in Puerto Escondido, particularly if you’re looking for a good family-friendly offering at a reasonable price point.
