Probably the most famous of these is the Day of the Dead festival, which is held in Oaxaca each year from 31 October to 2 November.

Other attractions of the city include its countless beautiful colonial-era buildings that date back to the time of Spanish rule in Mexico during the 16th century.

And if that isn’t impressive enough, just a short drive outside the city you’ll find Zapotec ruins that are literally thousands of years old.

Even though Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca is very centrally located in the historic center of Oaxaca, many of the best attractions in Oaxaca are outside of the city, so having a rental car is the ideal way to get around.

The hotel can also arrange offsite parking near the hotel for US$10 per day, so you don’t have to worry about where to park once you have the car.

Getting a car at the airport is very easy. You can book ahead and pick up your car in the arrivals hall of the terminal when you get off the plane.

I recommend using DiscoverCars to book the best deal available ahead of your arrival. You can expect to pay around US$30 per day plus gas for a basic rental car.

The simplest way to get to the hotel is by booking a private transfer on a platform like Viator. There are plenty of different providers for you to choose from, and prices start at around US$25 for a couple.

Take A Taxi

If you haven’t booked a car with the hotel, the simplest way to get from the airport to the hotel that requires absolutely no planning whatsoever is taking a taxi.

You’ll need to be able to tell the driver your destination and agree a price for the trip. The journey should cost you around US$15 – US$20 and you may need to haggle to get the driver down into that range.

You’ll also need to make sure that you have Mexican pesos with you, as the driver may not accept US dollars and won’t take credit cards.

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca is beautiful 21-room boutique hotel in central Oaxaca City set in a stunning 18th century colonial building with marble floorings and breathtaking colonial architecture.

As you enter the hotel building, you’ll see that it contains many original features. The most obvious of these is the gorgeous Spanish-style open-air interior courtyard area surrounded by the iconic white stone pillars and arched supports typical of the architecture of the period.

The crown jewel of the hotel, though, it its large roof terrace and pool area that boasts panoramic views of the city and the Sierra Madre mountain range surrounding the Oaxaca valley.

Each of the 21 rooms of the hotel is furnished in a tasteful, minimalist manner that incorporates Oaxacan artwork and artisanal crafts into the furnishing and decoration.

It’s a beautiful and very centrally-located hotel where you can be very comfortable and have all of the attractions of Oaxaca right outside the door.

I’ve set out below a summary of the hotel, the rooms, hotel facilities, dining options and nearby attractions.

After that, I’ve given you a list of pros and cons of the hotel and given my personal view on whether you should book Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca for your trip.

1. Location

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca has a great central location in Oaxaca City.

You’ll find it on Calle Macedonio Alcalá, the pedestrian street known as the Andador Turístico, just three blocks north of the Zócalo on the corner of Calle Mariano Matamoros. It’s a bright sunflower-colored building that’s hard to miss.

Being alongside the Andador Turístico is great for a few reasons. It’s one of the main footways through the city, so you’re ready to explore as soon as you step outside the door. Also, it’s a little quieter, because the hotel only have vehicle traffic on one side of the building.

Honestly, it’s difficult to imagine a better location if you’re looking to stay in the center of the city and do a lot of your exploring on foot. From the hotel, you’re just a hop, skip and a jump away from all the attractions that Oaxaca City has to offer.

Whatever you choose to do, it’s the perfect base for you to explore the city.

2. Price

The price per room at Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca starts at about US$135 per night for up to two. That price includes taxes and also includes breakfast in the onsite restaurant, El Patio.

3. Rooms

There are 21 rooms at Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca, spread out across the three floors of the hotel building.

Each room has a marble floor and uses 300-thread Egyptian cotton sheets on the bed.

You can choose from a Standard Room, Classic Room, Deluxe Room, Grand Deluxe Room, Superior Room, Junior Suite and Corner Suite.

Breakfast is included in the room price of each of the rooms and room service is also available until 11:00pm each evening.

I’ve set out more detail on each of these below.

Standard Room

The Standard Room is 205 sq. ft. (19 m²) and comes with a double-bed and a private shower-only bathroom with a rainfall shower-head.

You’ll also have access to a 32” flatscreen TV, cable channels, free WiFi, a room safe, desk and chair, armchair, a closet, and an iron and ironing facilities.

In the shower-only bathroom, you’ll find luxury ProTerra toiletries, bathrobes, slippers, towels, and a hairdryer.

You should be aware that this room has no windows.

The Standard Rooms start at US$135 per night for up to two.

Classic Room

The Classic Room is 215 sq. ft. (20 m²) and comes with a queen-sized bed and a private shower-only bathroom with a rainfall shower-head.

The Classic Room looks out onto the interior patio, and you’ll have access to the same amenities as the Standard Room.

The Classic Room starts at US$155 per night for up to two.

Deluxe Room

The Deluxe Rooms range from 237 to 269 sq. ft. (22 to 25 m²) and come with a king-sized bed and a private shower-only bathroom with a rainfall shower-head.

The Deluxe Rooms are available on all three floors of the hotel building and each looks out onto the interior patio. You’ll also have access to the same amenities that are available in the Classic Room.

The Deluxe Room starts at US$176 per night for up to two.

Grand Deluxe Room

The Grand Deluxe Room is a spacious 431 sq. ft. (40 m²) and comes with two double-beds and a private shower-only bathroom with a rainfall shower-head.

The Grand Deluxe Rooms are situated on the top floor of the hotel building near the pool area, and you’ll have access to the same amenities as the Deluxe Room plus a sofa, and a larger TV stand for your 40” flatscreen TV.

The Grand Deluxe Room starts at US$203 per night for up to two. You can have up to two additional guests stay in the room with you for an additional US$35 per person.

Superior Room

The Superior Rooms range from 355 to 420 sq. ft. (33 to 39 m²) and come with either a king-sized bed or two double-beds and a private shower-only bathroom with a rainfall shower-head.

Each of the Superior Rooms looks out onto the city, and you’ll have access to the same amenities as the Grand Deluxe Room.

The Superior Room starts at US$247 per night for up to two. You can have up to two additional guests stay in the room with you for an additional US$35 per person.

Junior Suite

The Junior Suite is 474 sq. ft. (44 m²) and comes with a king-sized bed, a sofa-bed and a private shower-only bathroom with a rainfall shower-head.

The Junior Suite looks out onto Oaxaca City and, in addition to the same amenities as the Grand Deluxe Room, you’ll also have access to a Nespresso coffee-machine and a minibar.

The Junior Suite is not currently available for online booking. If you are interested, I recommend you contact the hotel directly to see when this room will be available.

Corner Suite

The Corner Suite is 592 sq. ft. (55 m²) and comes with a king-sized bed and a private shower-only bathroom with a rainfall shower-head.

The Corner Suite has four balconies that look out onto Oaxaca City and, like the Junior Suite, you’ll also have access to a Nespresso coffee-machine and a minibar.

The Corner Suite is not currently available for online booking. If you are interested, I recommend you contact the hotel directly to see when this room will be available.

4. Hotel Facilities

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca has some great facilities available, considering that it is a relatively small boutique hotel.

The most striking of these is their luxurious and uber-modern rooftop pool and terrace area. The terrace and other areas of the hotel can also be used as spectacular locations for events.

The hotel also has a small gym and a business center that you can use, and offsite parking is available without reservation for 190 Mexican pesos per day (US$10).

I’ve set out more detail on these below.

Pool Area

The signature offering that makes Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca special is its fantastic rooftop pool, terrace and bar area.

The pool area has a luxurious modern design with plenty of sun loungers nearby for you to use to relax and work on your tan. There are also some great adjustable parasols if you want to relax out of the sun.

When you get thirsty, the nearby poolside bar can bring you a cocktail of your choice that you can sip while enjoying the glorious Oaxaca weather and the panoramic view of the city and the Sierra Madre mountains.

The hotel claims that it is the best rooftop pool in Oaxaca City, and with the possible exception of the rooftop pool at City Centro Oaxaca, I think they’re probably right.

Gym

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca also offers a small gym space, which is definitely a rarity for a boutique hotel in the historic center.

There isn’t loads of equipment available, but if you’re just looking to get a few miles in on the bike or the treadmill or to do a bit of early morning pilates or yoga, the space is perfect.

In any case, it’s great to be able to have the option of a quick session in the gym during your stay.

Business Area

If you are a digital nomad or need to work during your stay for any reason, Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca also has a dedicated business center space that is ideal for private meetings or working.

The business center is air-conditioned and is furnished with a large conference table and comfortable office chairs.

At 355 sq. ft. (33 m²), it can seat up to 18 people, making it ideal for catching up on a bit of work, taking a private call or even holding a private meeting. 

Events Areas

If you’re planning an event with a large group, the hotel can also convert its terrace area and courtyard into spaces that can be used for events. They can also help you furnish the spaces with whatever you need for whatever you’re planning.

The spaces have a capacity of up to 150 people, making them ideal for weddings, birthdays, baptisms or other events.

5. Dining Options

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca has an onsite restaurant, El Patio, that specialises in Oaxacan cuisine.

It’s located along one of the corridors next to the beautiful open-air courtyard in the center of the hotel.

The tables and chairs of the restaurant are set out alongside the majestic white supporting pylons, creating a lovely atmosphere and great backdrop for dining.

The breakfast included in your room price is served at El Patio each morning. You can enjoy a full American breakfast, a Oaxacan speciality like blackberry mole, or just a morning Oaxacan hot chocolate with your Oaxacan pan de yema bread.

Of an afternoon or evening, you can also stop by for lunch, dinner, an afternoon beer, wine, mezcal or an evening cocktail. The menus are helpfully bilingual, so even if your Spanish is a bit light, you’ll have no trouble explaining what you want.

El Patio is open Monday to Saturday from 7:30 a.m to 10:30 p.m every day, and room service is available.

6. Reviews

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca has a rating of 9.0 out of 10 from over 350 reviews, which is a fantastic score.

The story that the reviews tell is that people absolutely love this hotel. With the amazing rooftop pool, you might think that it’s a bit of a foregone conclusion, but it isn’t easy to keep reviews this high over a long period of time.

The reviews are glowing about the central location of the hotel and the hotel staff are also praised for being attentive and helpful.

Clearly what the hotel is doing, it is doing right.

7. Check-In and Check-Out

Check-in at the hotel is from 2:00pm, and check-out is before noon.

Late check-in and check-out can be provided subject to room availability.

8. Pet-Friendly?

No, Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca is not pet-friendly.

Unfortunately, if you want to visit this hotel, you’ll need to find a pet-sitter.

9. Family-Friendly?

Yes, children of all ages are welcome at Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca and children aged 12 years or older will be charged as adults.

There are no rollaway beds available, so you’ll need to book one of the rooms with additional beds.

The hotel has cots available on request, subject to availability.

10. Nearby Attractions

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca is very close to all of the attractions in Oaxaca City, and you’ll be able to reach everything within the city limits on foot.

Don’t forget your sunhat, suncream, and bottle of water from the hotel.

Attractions in Oaxaca City

If you’re planning to set off exploring the city on foot from the hotel, I would recommend that you start by walking the two blocks to the north along the Andador Turístico until you reach the Templo de Santo Domingo.

If you’re not familiar with it, the Templo de Santo Domingo is a beautiful building designed in the neo-Spanish baroque architectural style dating back to 1551. It’s one of the primary landmarks in Oaxaca City and an absolute must-see.

The Oaxaca Cultural Museum (Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca) is also next to the church and has lots of fascinating Oaxacan cultural exhibits. You can also walk over to nearby El Llano park, which is known for having a statue of one of Mexico’s most famous presidents, Benito Juárez, who was a native of Oaxaca.

If you prefer to head south from the hotel, Oaxaca’s stunning cathedral, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, is just two blocks away and is located right opposite the Zócalo, which is the heart of Oaxaca City. The beautiful Teatro Macedonio Alcalá is also just a few blocks to the east.

From the Zócalo, you can also continue further south to visit some of the city’s great markets like the Mercado 20 de Noviembre and Mercado Benito Juárez.

Attractions Outside Oaxaca City

If you have time to do a day-trip out of the city, there are also some fantastic places that I recommend you visit, and some of them are quite close by.

I’ve described a few of the best of these below.

Monte Albán

The closest attraction outside the city limits is the ruined Zapotec city of Monte Albán. It’s only three miles away from Oaxaca City, so you can reach it easily and can even fit something else in after you’re done exploring.

Monte Albán is built on the top of a hill overlooking Oaxaca. It’s quite large at about four square miles and there’s lots to see. Among other buildings, there are two pyramids, a ball court, and around 170 tombs.

The simplest way to reach Monte Albán is by taxi. It will cost around US$5 – US$10. Make sure you bring Mexican pesos and agree the price before you depart. 

There are also lots of Monte Albán tours available if you’d rather have the trip planned for you. Viator offers lots of different options, and you can often combine it with other attractions.

Hierve El Agua

Hierve El Agua is a unique geological marvel created from two petrified waterfalls about 40 miles to the south-east of Oaxaca.  

The smaller waterfall is called “la cascada chica” and the bigger one is called “la cascada grande”. The waterfalls were formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich waters ran over the edge of the cliff and down the escarpment.  

The plateau above the falls is covered in large shallow pools separated by beautiful mineral formations that look like atolls in an ocean. It makes you think that you are walking on a shallow reef in the Caribbean.

You can also hike to the bottom of the waterfalls, where there some more pools that you can sit in. There are change-rooms and toilets nearby.

The best way to visit Hierve El Agua is with a tour. There are some great tours from Oaxaca that combine Hierve El Agua with a visit to local mezcal producers or other attractions.

The hotel can recommend a tour operator, and Viator also has lots of them to choose from if you’d prefer to arrange a tour yourself.

Mitla

The ancient ruins of the Zapotec city of Mitla is about 30 miles to the south-east of Oaxaca, on the way to Hierve El Agua.  The name is derived from the Nahuatl word “Mictlán”, meaning “place of the dead”.

The ruins are situated in a valley nearly a mile above sea level and the site is thought to have been inhabited as far back as about 500 BC.  The city was a center of religious power in the region and was destroyed by the Spanish shortly after their arrival in the 16th century.

Mitla is perhaps best known for its intricate stone mosaics, which are sometimes called “Zapotec Greco”. You’ll recognize the striking pattern in lots of ancient friezes adorning walls and floors at the site, and it is often used in clothing and other artwork produced in Oaxaca.

My recommendation is to combine Mitla and Hierve El Agua together as a tour. They start at about US$50 per person on Viator, and you can speak to the concierge at Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca if you’d prefer to organise it through the hotel.

If you prefer to guide yourself, you can reach Mitla with a taxi or the bus, and its about a 90 minute trip each way.

Entrance to Mitla costs US$5 so bring your Mexican pesos with you.

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca: Pros and Cons

To try to pull all of the information above together for you, I’ve set out below the pros and cons of Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca as I see them.

Pros

Pros are easy here, because there are some genuinely top-notch aspects of Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca.

Top Location

Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca has an amazing location in the middle of the historic center of Oaxaca, making it an ideal base to explore the city.

From the hotel, you’re just two blocks south of the Templo de Santo Domingo and you’re just three blocks north of the Zócalo. Whatever you decide to go and see, you can quickly reach any attraction on foot.

The location is so good that reviews on Booking.com give it a location-rating of 9.9 out of 10.

If you’re looking for a centrally-located hotel, this is really a tough one to beat.

Rooftop Terrace & Pool

Probably the biggest selling point of Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca after its stellar location is its fantastic rooftop terrace and pool area.

There are plenty of sun loungers for you to work on your tan, and there is a great poolside bar to ensure that a cocktail is never far away when you need it.

It’s not the only rooftop area in Oaxaca, but it’s definitely one of the best. The rooftop at Casa Antonieta Oaxaca is also brilliant, but it doesn’t have a pool.

And although the rooftop at City Centro Oaxaca does have a pool, but it doesn’t quite have the wow-factor of the pool at Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca.

Definitely a big positive and one that sets it apart from the other Oaxacan hotels.

Beautiful Architecture

Another major selling point of Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca is its beautiful historic architecture that dates back to the 18th century, during the period of Spanish rule over the city.

The hotel is an absolutely beautiful example of Spanish colonial architecture. The iconic majestic stone arches and the spacious open-air interior courtyard a full of hundreds of years of character.

If you enjoy the beauty and history of old buildings, you can spend a while just walking around and taking in the Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca.

Cons

There are a few cons to Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca, although in my mind these tend to be a result of the boutique nature of the hotel and its central location.

Street Noise

You should be aware that there will be some inevitable street noise, given the hotel’s very central location.

The windows are okay as far as softening the sounds coming through, but they don’t completely stop loud vehicles like motorcycles going by.

The noise tends to stop of an evening by around 10:00pm, although it might go a little longer on a weekend or when one of the festivals such as Day of the Dead is taking place.

Rooms

The lowest category rooms at Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca are a little on the small side. They’re not so small as to be cramped, but if you’re booking those rooms, don’t expect anything palatial.

Also, if you’re booking the Standard Room, you should be aware that it doesn’t have a windows at all. The Classic Room does have a window, but it looks out onto the courtyard. You might need to draw the curtains if you need privacy, and then it will get a little dark if you don’t turn on the lights.

I don’t think any of this is particularly damning, and I think these features are fairly built into the price. Still, you should be aware of the deal when you book to make sure there are no misunderstandings when you arrive.

No Spa

For a boutique hotel, Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca actually has a reasonable number of amenities.

It has a great onsite restaurant, a rooftop pool and terrace area, and a business center. It also offers offsite parking for a reasonable price.

One thing is doesn’t have, though, is any kind of spa facilities. To be fair, onsite spa services aren’t common in boutique hotels in Oaxaca City. Some hotels like NaNa Vida Hotel Oaxaca are similarly priced and do offer those services, though, so it’s certainly something that the hotel could consider doing in the future.

If you weren’t planning on spending enough time in the hotel to use the amenities anyway, then you won’t even notice that it’s missing.

I don’t think this one is a huge downside, but if you were planning on doing a spa treatment, you should be aware that Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca doesn’t offer that service.

My Personal Views

Personally, I think Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca is a fantastic boutique hotel and the perfect place to base yourself when you visit Oaxaca City.

The hotel’s location is pretty close to unbeatable, which makes it great if you’re like me and tend to do a lot of your exploring on foot. The central location ends up saving you lots of money on taxis, because you can just walk everywhere.

For a hotel of its size, the range of amenities is also great. The rooftop terrace and pool area is definitely the biggest draw, but it also has a small gym and a great onsite restaurant as well.

The architecture of the hotel is also beautiful. All of the Spanish colonial elements of the 18th century building have been carefully preserved and the antiquity of the building gives the hotel a classic atmosphere.

Probably the only thing to be aware of is the one room without windows. It’s priced accordingly, but if you’re like me and prefer to have fresh air circulating in your room, you’re better off paying just a little more per night to get one of the rooms with a balcony.

Overall, if you’re looking for a centrally-located boutique hotel in a colonial period building in Oaxaca City, I think that Hotel Parador de Alcalá Oaxaca should be on your shortlist.
