If you aren’t familiar with Oaxaca, it’s a vibrant city in southern Mexico that is known for its rich cultural heritage and colorful traditions.

Probably the most famous of these is the Day of the Dead festival, which is held in Oaxaca each year from 31 October to 2 November.

Other attractions of the city include its countless beautiful colonial-era buildings that date back to the time of Spanish rule in Mexico during the 16th century.

And if that isn’t impressive enough, just a short drive outside the city you’ll find Zapotec ruins that are literally thousands of years old.

Book a Private Transfer

The simplest way to get to the hotel is by booking a private transfer on a platform like Viator. There are plenty of different providers for you to choose from, and prices start at around US$25 for a couple.

Take A Taxi

If you haven’t booked a car with the hotel, the simplest way to get from the airport to the hotel that requires absolutely no planning whatsoever is taking a taxi.

You’ll need to be able to tell the driver your destination and agree a price for the trip. The journey should cost you around US$15 – US$20 and you may need to haggle to get the driver down into that range.

You’ll also need to make sure that you have Mexican pesos with you, as the driver may not accept US dollars and won’t take credit cards.

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca is a boutique 27-room hotel comprised of three meticulously restored colonial-era houses in the historic center of Oaxaca City.

The hotel was designed by renowned architect João Boto Caeiro, a Portuguese architect based in Oaxaca known for having designed several Oaxacan hotels including Otro Hotel, Hotel Sin Nombre, and Flavia Hotel Oaxaca.

Well-known artist Guillermo Olguín was chosen to oversee the artistic design of the rooms in the hotel, which were designed and decorated by different artists so that each room is a unique artwork in and of itself.

Despite its impressive artistic aspects, the hotel is arguably better known for having not one but two roof terraces, Terraza Los Amantes and Vaca Marina. Each offers great food and incredible panoramic views of Oaxaca’s historic center including nearby Templo de Santo Domingo and the Auditorio Guelaguetza.

I’ve set out below a summary of the hotel, the rooms, hotel facilities, dining options and nearby attractions.

After that, I’ve given you a list of pros and cons of the hotel and given my personal view on whether you should book Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca for your trip.

1. Location

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca has a great location in the northern end of the historic center of Oaxaca City in Oaxaca, Mexico.

You’ll find it on Calle de Ignacio Allende between Calle de Manuel García Vigil and Calle de Macedonio Alcalá, which is a pedestrian street better known as the Andador Turístico.

From the hotel, you can reach all of the city’s attractions easily on foot or with bicycles that you can rent from the hotel.

The closest attraction is Templo de Santo Domingo, which is just one block to the west. You can see its neo-Spanish baroque cupolas from the hotel’s roof terraces.

You can also visit the Ethnobotanic Gardens (Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca) and the Oaxaca Cultural Museum (Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca), which are right next to the church.

If you head south, you can reach the Zócalo on foot in about 10 minutes walking along the Andador Turístico. From there, all the attractions of Oaxaca City are within easy reach.

There are 27 rooms at Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca. The hotel is comprised of three separate buildings: Casa Indigo, Casa Zanate, and Posada Dos Palmas.

Casa Indigo has 10 rooms, divided into Double Suites, Deluxe Suites, Junior Suites, Garden Suites, and Master Suites.

Casa Zanate has six rooms divided into Standard Suites, a Deluxe Suite, a Junior Suite and a Master Suite.

Posada Dos Palmas has 11 rooms divided into Standard Doubles, Standard Queens, Deluxe Suites and Master Suites.

Each of the rooms is individually decorated and styled. All of them come with bedding made from 100% natural fibres derived from bamboo that have hypoallergenic and antibacterial qualities.

Posada Dos Palmas

Posada Dos Palmas is the largest of the three houses and is also home to Vaca Marina on its roof terrace as well as Guajolote de Oro.

Standard Double

The Standard Double is a comfortable 215 sq. ft. (20 m²) and comes with a double-bed and a private shower-only bathroom. It looks out onto the interior garden of the hotel.

The room is air-conditioned and you’ll have access to clean linens, free WiFi, a flatscreen TV, cable channels, a telephone, a desk, a wardrobe, an iron and ironing board, a room safe and a coffee maker.

It’s located on the first floor of the building and looks out onto the hotel interior garden.

4. Hotel Facilities

Hotel Los Amantes has bicycles available for hire at the hotel. It also provides access to several off-site facilities.

I’ve set out a little more detail on some of these below.

Bicycle Hire

You can rent a bicycle directly at the hotel, which is a great way to get around Oaxaca.

The city is mostly flat in the historic center and cycling is a great way to take the weight off your feet during the heat of the day.

There are also bi-weekly cycling tours of the historic center by night. The hotel reception team can let you know when they’re due to take place so that you don’t miss out.

Mezcal Tour

In addition to the limited on-site amenities, the hotel also facilitates a number of activities, including a tour of the Los Amantes mezcal distillery, spa services, and off-site parking.

You can speak to the team at hotel reception if you are interested in taking part in any of the off-site amenities offered.

5. Dining Options

The Hotel Los Amantes really shines with its dining options.

It has not one but two sensational roof terrace bars, as well as a cocktail bar, Gualojote de Oro.

Terraza Los Amantes

Terraza Los Amantes is the primary roof terrace of Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca and the perfect spot to enjoy a drink with friends or a romantic evening as the sun goes down.

It’s primarily a bar, but also serves a good range of food including Oaxacan classics like tacos, tamales and ceviche as well as steak and fries or a hamburger if you’re not feeling very adventurous.

The impressive full range of Los Amantes mezcal is available, as well as cocktails, a variety of different wines, a range of craft beer, and other spirits.

Vaca Marina

If you’re looking to have dinner with a more fulsome range of choices, then Vaca Marina is the better bet.

Set on the rooftop of Posada Dos Palmas, Vaca Marina (as the name might suggest) is a seafood steakhouse fusion.

The menu provides a great cross-section of delicious options including oysters, clams, shrimp, crab, octopus, fish, steak, and chicken.

And if you’re interested in having a drink with your meal, their drinks list rivals that of the Terraza Los Amantes, so you’ll be in good hands in that regard as well.

Guajolote de Oro

Guajolote de Oro is a mezcal bar located within Posada Dos Palmas.

It’s quite lively and often features live musicians playing ballads on the guitar to create an authentic atmosphere.

You can get snacks, but if you’re looking to have dinner, you’re better off trying Vaca Marina or failing that Terraza Los Amantes.

6. Reviews

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca has a rating of 7.6 out of 10 on Booking.com from over 190 reviews.

The story that this score tells is that while there are a lot of positive reviews from happy guests, quite a few people weren’t happy with their stay.

One of the main reasons for this is that there can often be quite a lot of noise that reaches the hotel rooms when the rooftop bars have DJs playing music.

I’ve gone into this in a little more detail below.

7. Check-In and Check-Out

Check-in at the hotel is from 3:00pm to 11:00pm, and check-out is before 1pm.

Late check-in and check-out can be provided subject to room availability.

8. Pet-Friendly?

Yes, Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca is pet-friendly (although limited to dogs-only for the time being).

You’ll need to pay 300 Mexican pesos (US$17.50) per dog per day and only one pet is allowed per travelling group.

The hotel can provide you with food and food bowls.

9. Family-Friendly?

Yes, children of all ages are welcome at the Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca.

Rollaway beds and cribs are not available. However, if you book the Double Suite, you and your family of up to four can sleep in beds in the same large rooms.

10. Nearby Attractions

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca is very close to all of the attractions in Oaxaca City, and you’ll be able to reach everything within the city limits on foot.

Don’t forget your sunhat, suncream, and the bottles of water from the room in your hotel.

Attractions in Oaxaca City

If you’re planning to set off exploring the city on foot from the hotel, I recommend that you start by walking one block west to the Templo de Santo Domingo (pictured).

If you’re not familiar with it, it’s one of the primary landmarks in Oaxaca City. It’s a beautiful building designed in the neo-Spanish baroque architectural style dating back to 1551.

The Oaxaca Cultural Museum (Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca) is also next to the church and has lots of fascinating Oaxacan cultural exhibits.

After you’ve explored that area, you can take the pedestrian street known as the Andador Turístico south towards the Zócalo, which is the heart of Oaxaca City.

From the Zócalo, you can head south to visit some of the city’s great markets like the Mercado 20 de Noviembre and Mercado Benito Juárez.

Oaxaca’s stunning cathedral (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) is also right opposite the Zócalo, and the beautiful Teatro Macedonio Alcalá is just a few blocks to the east.

Attractions Outside Oaxaca City

If you have time to do a day-trip out of the city, there are also some fantastic places that I recommend you visit, and some of them are quite close by.

I’ve described a few of the best of these below.

Monte Albán

The closest attraction outside the city limits is the ruined Zapotec city of Monte Albán. It’s only three miles away from Oaxaca City, so you can reach it easily and can even fit something else in after you’re done exploring.

Monte Albán is built on the top of a hill overlooking Oaxaca. It’s quite large at about four square miles and there’s lots to see. Among other buildings, there are two pyramids, a ball court, and around 170 tombs.

The simplest way to reach Monte Albán is by taxi. It will cost around US$5 – US$10. Make sure you bring Mexican pesos and agree the price before you depart. 

There are also lots of Monte Albán tours available if you’d rather have the trip planned for you. Viator offers lots of different options, and you can often combine it with other attractions.

Hierve El Agua

Hierve El Agua is a unique geological marvel created from two petrified waterfalls about 40 miles to the south-east of Oaxaca.  

The smaller waterfall is called “la cascada chica” and the bigger one is called “la cascada grande”. The waterfalls were formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich waters ran over the edge of the cliff and down the escarpment.  

The plateau above the falls is covered in large shallow pools separated by beautiful mineral formations that look like atolls in an ocean. It makes you think that you are walking on a shallow reef in the Caribbean.

You can also hike to the bottom of the waterfalls, where there some more pools that you can sit in. There are change-rooms and toilets nearby.

The best way to visit Hierve El Agua is with a tour. There are some great tours from Oaxaca that combine Hierve El Agua with a visit to local mezcal producers or other attractions.

The hotel can recommend a tour operator, and Viator also has lots of them to choose from if you’d prefer to arrange a tour yourself.

Mitla

The ancient ruins of the Zapotec city of Mitla is about 30 miles to the south-east of Oaxaca, on the way to Hierve El Agua.  The name is derived from the Nahuatl word “Mictlán”, meaning “place of the dead”.

The ruins are situated in a valley nearly a mile above sea level and the site is thought to have been inhabited as far back as about 500 BC.  The city was a center of religious power in the region and was destroyed by the Spanish shortly after their arrival in the 16th century.

Mitla is perhaps best known for its intricate stone mosaics, which are sometimes called “Zapotec Greco”. You’ll recognize the striking pattern in lots of ancient friezes adorning walls and floors at the site, and it is often used in clothing and other artwork produced in Oaxaca.

My recommendation is to combine Mitla and Hierve El Agua together as a tour. They start at about US$50 per person on Viator, and you can speak to the concierge at Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca if you’d prefer to organise it through the hotel.

If you prefer to guide yourself, you can reach Mitla with a taxi or the bus, and its about a 90 minute trip each way.

Entrance to Mitla costs US$5 so bring your Mexican pesos with you.

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca: Pros and Cons

To try to pull all of the information above together for you, I’ve set out below the pros and cons of Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca as I see them.

Pros

Pros are easy here, because there are some fantastic aspects of Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca.

Top Location

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca has an amazing location in the north of the historic center of Oaxaca making it an ideal base to explore the city.

From the hotel, you’re just one block away from the Templo de Santo Domingo with its beautiful period architecture. You’re also only a few blocks north of the Zócalo, which is the heart of Oaxaca City.

If you’re looking for a centrally-located hotel in Oaxaca City, Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca should definitely make your shortlist.

Beautiful hotel Building

The hotel is located in three architecturally restored and designed colonial-era mansion houses.

The renovation has introduced modern flair to the property while retaining the beautiful facade and structural aspects of the Spanish-style colonial buildings.

Each hotel room is individually curated by Oaxacan artists so if you like your artistic hotels, you will love Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca.

roof Terrace Areas

Hotels with a roof terrace in Oaxaca are a sought-after commodity, and Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca has not only one but two of them.

Each has beautiful uninterrupted views of the Templo de Santo Domingo and a brilliant range of Oaxacan mezcal, wine, and cocktails.

The menu offered by Vaca Marina is extensive and includes full three-course meals, so you won’t need to fill up on snacks either.

The dining options are definitely a major plus at this hotel.

Cons

There are a few cons to Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca, although I think a lot of these come with the style of the hotel.

Noise From Within The Hotel

One of the downsides of having a rooftop bar is that there is likely to be some noise that makes its way down to the hotel rooms.

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca has a number of rooms that are situated right beneath the rooftops bars, and guests have complained in the past that the noise is so loud that they can’t sleep until the bar closes at 1:00am.

There are rooms on the lower floors where the noise isn’t as extreme as that and the hotel does provide earplugs, but you should be aware that noise could be a factor before you book.

Price

The price of the hotel starts at US$298 per night in the Double Room of Posada Dos Palmas.

While that’s by no means the most expensively nightly rate in Oaxaca, that’s just the starting price, and most of the rooms are 214sq. ft., which is a little on the small side.

But like any architecturally designed artistic hotel, as long as you see value in staying at a hotel that feels like a living work of art, then you’ll likely see value for money here.

Limited On-Site Amenities

Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca doesn’t really do much in the line of amenities. There isn’t much else offered by the hotel directly beyond its admittedly fantastic roof terraces.

There’s no spa offering, no gym, and no parking facilities, although the hotel can facilities a lot of this externally if you’re keen to use them.

If you weren’t planning on spending enough time in the hotel to use the amenities anyway, then you won’t even notice that they’re missing.

But if you were planning for a spa treatment or using the gym, you should be aware that Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca doesn’t offer those amenities onsite.

My Personal Views

If you’re looking for a genuinely beautiful artistic hotel where you can party into the wee hours on one of Oaxaca’s best roof terraces, then I think you will have an unbeatable time at Hotel Los Amantes Oaxaca.

You’ll also have a fantastic location. You’ll be a stone’s throw away from the Templo de Santo Domingo and everything you’ll want to see is within walking distance. The hotel can even rent you a bicycle if you don’t feel like walking.

On the dining side of things, the hotel offers a continental breakfast within the price of the room that you can take on the roof terrace at Vaca Marina each morning. You can also visit Vaca Marina or Terraza Los Amantes for dinner if you don’t fee like leaving the hotel to find something of an evening.

And then there are the hotel rooms themselves. Although their less-premium rooms are a little on the small side, they’re all gorgeous and include 100% Egyptian cotton bedsheets and luxury toiletries. The Junior Suite at Casa Indigo even includes its own private tub looking out onto Templo de Santo Domingo.

I think the only proper downside is the noise that you’ll hear from the rooftop bars, particularly if you’re given a room on the upper levels of the hotel beneath the bar. If you’re planning to be in the bar of an evening anyway, then it obviously won’t bother you.

But if you know that you’ll have an early tour of the city planned or want to make sure that you’ll be able to get some sleep, I recommend that you ask to be housed on the lower floors of the building. You should also make sure that you bring your earplugs with you, as you might need them when the DJs are doing their sets.
