If you’re not familiar with Oaxaca, it is a state in southern Mexico with around 370 miles of pacific coastline.

It’s home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, if not the world, and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Puerto Ángel is a small beach town just a few miles to the west of Zipolite and Mazunte, and about midway between the well-known Oaxacan beach towns of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco.

Nearby Zipolite is known for having Mexico’s only legal nude beach, Playa Zipolite, and the highly-rated Hotel Nude.

The slightly more distant Mazunte is home to several beautiful beaches including Punta Cometa, which is known for its magnificent sunsets.

All of these attractions are within easy reach if you rent a car at Huatulco airport when you arrive, which I definitely recommend that you do.

How Do I Get To Casa Bichú?

Part of the reason that Casa Bichú is such a gem is that it is a little off the beaten track. While that makes it a fantastic destination, it does also make it a little hard to reach.

I’ve set out the steps you’ll need to take to get to Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique as efficiently as possible.

Flying Into Huatulco

To reach Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique, you’ll need to first fly into Huatulco International Airport (HUX), which is just under 25 miles from the hotel.

In North America, you can get a direct international flight from Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto or Edmonton.

From elsewhere in the world, you’ll need to fly into Mexico and take a connecting flight. There are regular flights to Huatulco from Mexico City, Tijuana, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Oaxaca.

Flights from Mexico City are by far the most frequent. Unless you’re planning on stopping over in one of the other cities listed above for a few days, I recommend you fly via Mexico City.

Huatulco Airport to the Hotel

Once you arrive in Huatulco airport, you’ve got a few options to get to Casa Bichú. You can rent a car, take a taxi, or book a private transfer.

Rent a Car

If you’re staying for more than a day or two, I recommend that you rent a car at the airport. There isn’t much in the way of public transport in Puerto Ángel so having a rental car is the ideal way to get around.

Getting a car at the airport is very easy. You can book ahead and pick up your car in the arrivals hall of the terminal when you get off the plane.

I recommend using DiscoverCars to book the best deal available ahead of your arrival. You can expect to pay around US$30 per day plus gas for a basic rental car.

Take A Taxi

The simplest way to get from the airport to the hotel that requires absolutely no planning whatsoever is taking a taxi.

You’ll need to be able to tell the driver your destination and agree a price for the trip. The journey should cost you around 300 – 400 Mexican pesos (US$15 – US$20) and you’ll probably need to haggle to get the driver down into that range.

You’ll also need to make sure that you have Mexican pesos with you, as the driver may not accept US dollars and won’t take credit cards.

Book a Private Transfer

If you don’t want to rent a car but are looking for a little more privacy for the journey to the hotel, you can book a private transfer. A private transfer is also great if you have a large group.

The best way to do this is using a platform like Viator or Guatego. Prices start at around US$135 for groups of up to 4.

I’ve set out below a summary of the hotel, the rooms, hotel facilities, dining options and nearby attractions.

After that, I’ve given you a list of pros and cons of the hotel and given my personal opinion on whether you should book Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique for your trip.

Let’s jump right in.

1. Location

Casa Bichú is a boutique hotel situated right on the pacific coastline within walking distance to Playa Estacahuite in Puerto Ángel, Mexico.

The hotel is close to the nightlife and other attractions of Zipolite and Mazunte, which are just a short drive away.

2. Price

The price per room at Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique ranges from between around US$220 per night in the low season and US$270 per night in the high season for a standard suite.

3. Rooms

Each of the nine suites at Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique are completely self-contained and have a breathtaking view of the ocean.

They range through suites, junior suites, junior deluxe suites, and deluxe suites. Deluxe suites are a whopping 160m² but even the suites are still very spacious at 80m².

The deluxe suites have two levels. The upper level has a balcony with hammocks where you can just sway in the breeze and breathe in the sea air.

The interior of each of the suites sports a modern layout with a king-sized bed and private bathroom with luxury Casa Bichú toiletries.

Each of the suites comes with a wardrobe, sofa-bed, air-conditioning, free bottled water, WiFi, a flat-screen TV, and a room safe as standard.

4. Hotel Facilities

Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique has a great selection of facilities.

Pool Area

The hotel is built on the face of a sloping hill that runs right down to the rocks on which the waves crash in from the Pacific ocean.

At the bottom of the hill, just 25 feet or so above the crashing waves and running right up to the edge, the hotel has a large pool area for guest use.

Separate from the generous-sized pool, there are also two hot-tubs, one in front of the pool and another a little way off to the right.

Set back a little from the pool area, there are sun lounges where you can relax in the sun between dips.

Playa Estacahuite

If you’d prefer to swim in the sea rather than the pool, there’s a private access path that leads directly down to the beach.

It’s a very quick walk, and from there you can explore the three separate beachheads that make up Playa Estacahuite.

A little below the pool area you’ll find a little landing overlooking the ocean that you can use to host events such as birthdays or weddings.

In the soft light of a warm evening with the waves pounding beneath the platform, it makes for a very romantic setting.

Free Onsite Parking

Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique also offers free onsite parking. This is great if you have a rental car, as you don’t to worry about theft or damage when you’re not using it.

5. Restaurants & Bars

Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique has its own restaurant, Nanixhe. Nanixhe offers a mix of seafood dishes and other Mexican staples such as tlayudas and enchiladas.

There’s also a small bar in the pool area.

Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique has a rating of 8.6 out of 10 from 19 reviews on Expedia.com and has received high ratings consistently for the last 18 months.

Some guests have given negative reviews based on the difficulty of getting transport in and out of the hotel without a rental vehicle. A few guests also reported that the hotel restaurant is not always open because of the small size of the property.

As I suggested above, I recommend that you rent a car at Huatulco airport if you plan on staying at Casa Bichú. So long as you have your own transport, you’ll have no difficulties getting around and you can dine out in nearby Zipolite and Mazunte any time you like.

7. Check-In and Check-Out

Check-in at the hotel is from 3pm until midnight, and check-out is before noon.

Late check-in and check-out can be provided subject to room availability.

8. Pet-Friendly

Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique is pet-friendly, although you’ll need to pay 500 Mexican pesos (US$25) per pet per day if you want to stay here with your pets.

9. Family-Friendly

Casa Bichú allows children, but they don’t have any additional beds that they can provide.

They also can’t provide cots for infants, so you will need to bring your own if you are planning on travelling with your little one.

10. Nearby Attractions

Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique is very close to Zipolite and Mazunte, which offer a range of attractions.

If you rent a car, it is also close enough to reach both Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, which are larger than Zipolite and Mazunte and have a wider selection of beaches, restaurants and bars.

Sea Turtle Release

If you haven’t experienced a sea turtle release, I recommend doing one while you’re staying at Casa Bichú.

The Oaxaca coastline is a breeding ground for four of the seven varieties of sea turtles in the world. Some of those turtles species are endangered, and in and around Oaxaca there are non-profit organisations that try to support them.

Part of that work is incubating the eggs laid by the adult female turtles and helping the babies into the ocean after they hatch.

For a fee, you can participate in a sea turtle release and watch them flapping their cute leathery little way down the beach and into the ocean.

The closest place to do a sea turtle release is at La Escobilla in Huatulco. You can also join a tour in Huatulco if you’d like a guide or just like to do it as part of a day tour.

Punta Cometa

The “sunset walk” down to Punta Cometa in Mazunte is another attraction that I recommend you add to your list.

Punta Cometa is Mexico’s southern-most point and is known for being a wonderful place to watch the sun go down.

As you listen to the sound of the waves crashing against the rugged rocky outcrop, you can watch nature’s daily magic as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.

Mazunte is about 6 miles from Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique and you can reach it easily by taxi or with your rental car.

The “sunset walk” is about a mile long. You can join it at Playa Mazunte and you just walk down the hill to the rocks of Punta Cometa.

Huatulco Boat Tours

I would also recommend doing a boat tour of the beautiful Huatulco bays.

Huatulco is actually called “Bahías de Huatulco”, meaning bays of Huatulco, which is a reference to its large number of coves. Many of these coves are difficult to access from the road and are rarely visited as a result.

Taking a boat tour is a great way to take in all of Huatulco’s beauty in a day, and if you’re lucky you may also see some of the dolphins, manta rays or even whales as well.

I’ve set out the pros and cons of Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique as I see them.

Pros

There are some magnificent aspects of Casa Bichú that make it a real gem.

Amazing Views

The biggest selling point of Casa Bichú is its amazing view, which you can enjoy from every one of its nine suites.

You’ll wake up every morning and really feel like you’re in paradise as you stare out into the unending blue of the ocean.

Spacious Suites

The rooms are very spacious. Even the standard suite is 80m² and the deluxe suite is enormous.

For a romantic getaway where you’re planning to relax and spend a lot of time lounging around or swaying in your hammock, Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique really is a great option.

Pool Area & Beach Access

Casa Bichú also has a fantastic pool area with two hot tubs that run right up to the edge of the rocks and let you look right out into the ocean.

The hotel also has private access to Playa Estacahuite, which is a beautiful secluded beach where you can safely swim.

Cons

There are a few cons to Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique, although I think that all of them can be managed if you have a rental car with you.

Limited Dining Options

The hotel restaurant is fine for breakfast, but it isn’t really a high-end restaurant so don’t expect to be wowed. You’ll need to drive the three miles into Zipolite if you’re looking for something fancier.

Remote Location

For most people choosing Casa Bichú, the remote location is probably a major plus because it will help you to disconnect from the world.

Just know that if you do want to reconnect even temporarily, you’ll be a few miles away from civilization.

Tricky With Children

Even though children are allowed at Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique, you won’t be able to just add a bed to the room, which makes travelling with a family challenging.

The hotel also isn’t very large, and other than Playa Estacahuite, there isn’t much for kids to explore on the hotel grounds.

They may go a bit stir crazy if you’re staying for more than a few days, so plan to take them out on day trips!

My Opinion

In my opinion, I think Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique is a great option if you’re looking for a secluded getaway on a beautiful part of the Oaxacan coastline.

If you’re travelling as a couple, it’s the perfect romantic setting where you can disconnect and enjoy the company of your partner.

However, unless you aren’t planning on leaving the hotel often during your stay, I would strongly recommend that you rent a car if you book Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique.

Other than Playa Estacahuite, you’ll need a car to visit all of the nearby attractions. You’ll just have a better trip with your own vehicle.

I also wouldn’t recommend Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique if you’re travelling with a family and you’re planning on staying for more than a few days. Unless you book two suites, I think you’ll have trouble sleeping everyone comfortably.

Provided you have a car, though, you can drive over to Zipolite and Mazunte in just a few minutes to enjoy the fantastic beaches, bars and restaurants. You can also venture farther afield to Huatulco and even Puerto Escondido if you feel like doing a road trip.

All in all, I think a few days at Casa Bichú Hotel Boutique would be a wonderful way for you and your lover to spend some romantic time together or just to let your batteries recharge in a stunningly beautiful part of Oaxaca.
